Southport is a town and island in Lincoln County, Maine, United States. The population was 622 at the 2020 census. [3] It includes the neighborhoods of Capitol Island, Cozy Harbor, East Side, Newagen, Pine Cliff, and West Southport, and the village of Squirrel Island. The majority of the town's residents live on its main island, Southport Island.
The Maine Coastal Island Registry (CIR) catalogs 3,166 of these coastal islands, along with some notable inland freshwater islands, such as Frye Island in Sebago Lake. According to the most recent CIR data, 1,846 islands are registered to private owners, while 204 islands, which contain four or more structures, are exempt from registration.
Farmers and shepherds have resided on Squirrel Island since the American Revolution. [1] The summer colony was created with the formation of the Squirrel Island Association in 1871, and the subsequent establishment of a village corporation within the town of Southport, the first of a handful of communities so governed in the state of Maine, in 1903. Between 1630 and 1650, the area was the center for fur trading in Maine. It was attacked and rebuilt repeatedly during the French and Indian Wars, with the final two attacks occurring in 1747 at Fort Frederick. In 1765, Bristol was incorporated as a town, with South Bristol its western portion. [3]
State Route 238 (SR 238) is a state highway located on Southport Island in south central Maine. It runs entirely within the town of Southport and intersects with SR 27 at both ends. SR 238 traverses the eastern edge of Southport Island, serving as an alternate to SR 27 which runs roughly parallel on the western side of the island.
