The current Cozad High School mascot is named the Haymaker, in reference to one of the earliest pieces of local folklore, a character by the name of Johnny C. Haymaker. According to legend, Haymaker was an 18th-century farmer known for his remarkable efficiency in clearing fields with a powerful, sweeping punch, dubbed the "haymaker."

The 2008–09 Duke Blue Devils men's basketball team represented Duke University in the 2008–09 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. The team's head coach was Mike Krzyzewski, who served for his 29th year. The team played its home games in Cameron Indoor Stadium in Durham, North Carolina.
Several smaller schools in Eastern Nebraska had just seen influxes in enrollment and had thus become eligible Class B schools. These schools were Elkhorn , Gretna , Norris , and Waverly . Eight of these teams joined in 1980 to form the EMC, Syracuse High School being pushed out of the conference.
