The GE AC44C6M is an AC-traction 4,400-horsepower (3,300 kW) diesel locomotive, rebuilt from GE Transportation Dash 9 locomotives. AC44C6M rebuilds have been done by GE (now Wabtec ), American Motive Power, Inc., and Norfolk Southern Railway 's Juniata and Roanoke Shops, starting in September 2015.
Also in 2015, NS 8799 became the first NS GE Dash 9-40C to be rebuilt as an AC44C6M. The locomotive was rebuilt with a new GE wide nose and cab, and had locomotive speed limiter (LSL) and cab signals installed. These traction motor replacements are part of a Norfolk Southern / General Electric project to test the economic feasibility of ...
The orders for these units were basically an extension of NS's previous order for the standard cab Dash 9-40C (or C40-9) (see above). They were built under the same premise that a lower power rating than the 4,400 hp (3,300 kW) rating of the Dash 9-44CW (or C44-9W) (see below) would prolong the life of the engine, and use less fuel.
The GE Dash 9-40CW is a 4,000-horsepower (3,000 kW) diesel-electric locomotive built by GE Transportation Systems of Erie, Pennsylvania, between January 1996 and December 2004. 1,090 were built for Norfolk Southern Railway, as road numbers 8889 to 9978. 53 GE Dash 8-44CWs built to Dash 9 specifications were also built for CSX Transportation, carrying road numbers 9000 to 9052.
Rio Tinto ordered 100 ES44DCi locomotives and has all 100 (numbered 8100–8199) and 21 ES44ACi locomotives (numbered 9100–9120) and more are on order. Rio Tinto's units can be remotely driven, meaning nobody has to be in the cab as they can be controlled from a control center. [10] Ferromex also acquired 50 ES44ACi.
NS recently acquired 36 of these locomotives from CEFX in June 2023. They are currently being patched for starting service on the roster. These units will be rebuilt to AC44C6M locomotives (similar to the ones from the Dash 9 locomotives) at the Wabtec locomotive plant in Fort Worth, TX. The first unit, NS 3980, was the first unit to be rebuilt ...
2500-2522 equipped with 'Canadian style' four-window cab, classified as Dash 9-44CWL; 50 units rebuilt into AC44C6M models. 2727 rebuilt from 2667. Units 2697-2726 sub-lettered for Illinois Central. Non four-window cab variants came equipped with a different style cab where the nose slants down on both sides, allowing the windows to be notched ...
The "W" suffix indicates the then-optional wide-nose "North American" safety cab. For example, the Santa Fe used the designation "B40-8W" for GE's "Dash 8-40BW". The railroad continued this practice until its merger with the Burlington Northern Railroad in 1995, and the new railroad, Burlington Northern-Santa Fe (later BNSF Railway) furthered ...
