The Nauset Archaeological District (or "Coast Guard Beach Site,19BN374" or "North Salt Pond Site,19BN390") is a National Historic Landmark District in Eastham, Massachusetts. Located within the southern portion of the Cape Cod National Seashore, this area was the location of substantial ancient settlements since at least 4,000 BC. [1]
The Wampanoag people inhabited and used all of the lands within the national seashore, including the dunes area, prior to European settlement in the 1600s. [4]The Massachusetts Humane Society built some of the earliest extant structures in the dunes area in 1872 to house members of the United States Life-Saving Service, whose mission was to assist survivors of shipwrecks.
In addition to its residential areas, Sagamore Beach has a small commercial district located near the Sagamore Bridge and along Massachusetts Route 3A, [1] which passes through the bridge. It also adjoins the Scusset Beach State Reservation, a public-access, beachfront recreation site located at the northern end of Cape Cod Canal.
