Deerfield Academy (often called Deerfield or DA) is an independent college-preparatory boarding and day school in Deerfield, Massachusetts. Founded in 1797, it is one of the oldest secondary schools in the United States. It is a member of the Eight Schools Association and the Ten Schools Admission Organization.

DeSmith played junior hockey in the NEPSAC league for Berwick Academy from 2006 to 2008. After one season with Deerfield Academy, he joined the Indiana Ice of the United States Hockey League, where he earned a 0.911 save percentage, a 2.80 GAA, and three shutouts in 64 regular season games.

MacArthur's first name was in honor of his great-aunt, actress Helen Hayes, who was married to Charles MacArthur, his grandfather Alexander MacArthur's brother.
