Bramme for the Ruhr-District, 1998 at Essen Sea Level (South-west part), Zeewolde, Netherlands. Richard Serra (November 2, 1938 – March 26, 2024) was an American artist known for his large-scale abstract sculptures made for site-specific landscape, urban, and architectural settings, and whose work has been primarily associated with Postminimalism.
This is most evident in her sculpture Echo 5 from 1993 which evokes a seated African icon with headdress and body scarification. Her abstract welded steel sculptures have been compared by art historians such as Lisa E. Farrington to the artistic aesthetic and work of Barbara Chase-Riboud. [6] [5] [7]
Traditionally, metal sculpture meant bronze casts, which artisans produced using a mold made by the artist. Smith, however, made his sculptures from scratch, welding together pieces of steel and other metals with his torch, in much the same way that a painter applied paint to a canvas; his sculptures are almost always unique works.
