The first foreign book to be translated into Odia was the Bible's New Testament in 1809. It was followed by translation of Hebrew poems by J. Carey in 1814 and John Bunyan's classic The Pilgrim's Progress by A. Sutton in 1820. Madhusudan Rao translated William Cowper's Solitude of Alexander Selkirk as Nirbasitara Vilaapa.
Bhavishya Malika is a Odia language book published in the sixteenth century by the saint Shri Achyutananda Dasa. [1] The book is about predictions of the future by Shri Achyutananda Dasa based on a much older book from the 12th century and the saint was one of the five friends named 'Panchasakha' Sri Ananta Dasa, Sri Jasobanta Dasa, Sri Jagannatha Dasa and Sri Balarama Dasa. [2]
There were multiple books written that summarised the Jagamohana Ramayana called Tika Ramayana. There were several of these abridged versions. Odia children's literature' has a long history. Its roots are in Moukhika Sishu Sahitya, which is a part of the Loka Sahitya meant for children. As its development started after modern education was implemented, Odia children's literature is divided into two categories, Odia Moukhika children's literature and Odia written children's literature.
Kanhu Charan Mohanty was born on 11 August 1906 in Nagabali village of Cuttack, India, to an Odia family. [2] [3] He is an elder brother of Gopinath Mohanty (1914–91) who was also a Jnanpith Award-winning (1974) Odia novelist.
