February 7, 1980: China Airlines Flight 009, operated by a Boeing 747-200B (B-1866), suffered a tailstrike while landing at Kai Tak Airport. The plane was ferried unpressurized back to Taiwan to be repaired on the same day. The aircraft involved in the incident would later suffer a mid-air breakup in 2002 while flying as China Airlines Flight 611.
On 16 February 1986, a Boeing 737-281 operating a charter flight as China Airlines Flight 2265 went missing after executing a go-around after touching down at Penghu Airport, Taiwan. It was discovered several weeks later on the seabed, 19 kilometres (12 mi; 10 nmi) north of the island. All 6 passengers and 7 crew members were confirmed dead.
