Best as I can tell, it’s a cross between a Growler and a Killer B, so I’m not sure what to call it. It has a Killer B neck (as a backside picture would show), albeit accommodating 19mm string spacing instead of the standard 17.5mm. It has the thinner and more lightweight 4-knob Growler body (not 5-knobs like the B), but with dual pickups ...
Most of my fretless basses over the decades were 5-string (Yamaha BX-5 I had converted to fretless by John Carruthers, two Zons, and the first Martin Keith Elfin 5 I bought), so, there's that. As to 4-string fretless basses, my first was the 1972 7ender Telecaster Bass I defretted, and the '84 Alembic Exploiter I had converted to fretless.

After months of flip-flopping I bought the fretless 5-string LTD B-205sm-FL and am very happy with it. It's a perfect match for my fretted LTD B-205sm. Everything's the same except for frets-vs-not.

The OEM strings on that bass were D’Addario Chromes ECB81 (45-100), so that is potentially a good starting point for you. With the right setup and technique, Chromes can really sing and produce that mwah sound on a fretless IMO. Cormoran315. C.
Sep 17, 2014. #1. I’ve seen quite a few posts on here about Copley basses, so I thought I would add my experience. I picked up a Copley 5 string unlined fretless bass for $175, which at that price didn’t seem much of a risk. I had seen the mixed review on Talkbass and glowing reviews elsewhere, so went in to this with almost no expectations.
4,571. Tucson, AZ. Aug 27, 2010. #10. I have owned a Schecter Stilleto Custom 4 for six years and its been a very "road-worthy" bass. I used it for studio and stage, it always gets a lot of compliments on the finish (quilted Black cherry, a popular finish for Schecter) and paid $625 new from a local shop.
I had a 36"scale 6 string fretless, lovely bass, but the top "C" was too twangy (not helped by the 36"scale). I also started to get pain in my left hand thumb joint, especially after playing this bass. I've now got an Xotic 5 sting fretless jazz and love it. Yes there are occasions where you miss the range across the strings, but i can live ...

I am not entirely sure (could be ssteel, too), but I use the same on my 5-string Human Base and its ebony fb. They are very soft tension, easy to play and give a very nice fretless sound, including your desired mwahhhh.
