A time signature (also known as meter signature, [ 1 ]metre signature, [ 2 ] and measure signature) [ 3 ] is a convention in Western music notation that specifies how many note values of a particular type are contained in each measure ( bar ). The time signature indicates the meter of a musical movement at the bar level.
Time signatures indicate the number of beats in each measure (the top number) and also show what type of note represents a single beat (the bottom number). There may be any number of beats in a measure but the most common by far are multiples of 2 and/or 3 (i.e., 2, 3, 4, and 6).

"Unusual" is here defined to be any time signature other than simple time signatures with top numerals of 2, 3, or 4 and bottom numerals of 2, 4, or 8, and compound time signatures with top numerals of 6, 9, or 12 and bottom numerals 4, 8, or 16.
