A bumblebee (or bumble bee, bumble-bee, or humble-bee) is any of over 250 species in the genus Bombus, part of Apidae, one of the bee families. This genus is the only extant group in the tribe Bombini, though a few extinct related genera (e.g., Calyptapis) are known from fossils.

Bombus bifarius has a relatively small body size ranging from 8 to 14 mm (0.31 to 0.55 in) for workers and 15–19 mm (0.59–0.75 in) for queens, with short, even hair covering their bodies. [5] Hair on the faces of B. bifarius individuals is usually yellow or white in color and sometimes exhibits black coloration on the top of the head. [ 5 ]
Bombus impatiens, the common eastern bumblebee, is the most commonly encountered bumblebee across much of eastern North America. [3] They can be found in the Eastern temperate forest region of the eastern United States , southern Canada , and the eastern Great Plains . [ 4 ]
The other parts of the thorax and abdomen are black. The worker is similar in appearance to the queen but smaller at a length of 9 to 14 mm (0.35 to 0.55 in). The male is intermediate in size, being 13 to 17 mm (0.5 to 0.7 in) long. In the male, abdominal segments 2, 3, and 7 are yellowish-brown as are usually the sides of abdominal segment 6. [5]
A few ways are used to determine the sex of the western bumble bee. [1] The males (drones) have seven abdominal segments, while the females (queens and workers) have only six. [1]
Queens range in size from 0.97 to 1.07 inches (25-27 mm) while workers range in size from 0.56 to 0.75 inches (15-19 mm). [6] Queens and workers have very similar coloration. The female bee’s body is covered in short yellow and black hairs with distinctive flattened, black hairs on the third tergal segment. [ 6 ]
