Ichiro Suzuki / ˈ iː tʃ ɪ r oʊ s uː ˈ z uː k i / (鈴木 一朗, Suzuki Ichirō, born 22 October 1973), also known mononymously as Ichiro (イチロー, Ichirō), is a Japanese former professional baseball outfielder who played for 28 seasons.
Ichiro developed his unique swing very early, lifting his right leg and almost running to first base before hitting the ball. Repeatedly told in Japan to change it, he declined. His given name Ichiro — ’ichi” means “one” in Japanese — started appearing on the back of his jersey in 1994 with the Orix BlueWave.
The franchise that eventually became the Orix Buffaloes was founded in 1936 under the ownership of a Japanese railway company Hanshin Kyuko Railway Company (阪神急行電鉄, Hanshin Kyuko Dentetsu, present: Hankyu Hanshin Holdings, Inc.), as Osaka Hankyu Baseball Club (大阪阪急野球協会, Ōsaka hankyū yakyū kyōkai).

Ichiro's 242 base hits set the record for the most hits in a season by a rookie. [2] Nine different pitchers have been named to an All-Star Rookie Team and then won a league Cy Young Award, given annually to the best pitchers in Major League Baseball (MLB). Tom Seaver (1967) won three CY awards (1969, 1973, 1975) during his career. [3]
