Kwame Malik Kilpatrick (born June 8, 1970) is an American former politician and convicted felon who served as the 72nd mayor of Detroit from 2002 to 2008. A member of the Democratic Party , he previously represented the 9th district in the Michigan House of Representatives from 1997 to 2002.
The text messages appear to contradict testimony that Kilpatrick and Beatty gave at a trial in 2007 in regards to whether they had an affair and had fired an officer for investigating the mayor's behavior. The City of Detroit settled the lawsuit for $8.4 million based on the recommendation of Kilpatrick and the City of Detroit law department. [1]
