In 1996, Orient-Express Hotels acquired La Samanna [2] and embarked on a programme of renovation. The resort at one point stocked a cellar with 12,000 bottles of wine including 146 varieties of Bordeaux. It had its own private label: Hospices de Beaune La Samanna. The section was originally called Quartier d'Orient, named for the nearby inlet, Orient Bay. The name may have subsequently been changed in honor of the brother of the French King, the Duke of Orléans. The Quarter was the first French settlement on the island, established sometime prior to 1648 next to an indigenous Amerindian village.
