The Asantehene is the title for the monarch of the historical Ashanti Empire as well as the ceremonial ruler of the Ashanti people today. The Ashanti royal house traces its line to the Oyoko (an Abusua, or "clan") Abohyen Dynasty of Nana Twum and the Oyoko Dynasty of Osei Tutu Opemsoo, who formed the Empire of Ashanti in 1701 and was crowned Asantehene (King of all Asante). [1]
These were then followed by the investiture of Bukali II as substantive King of the Kingdom of Dagbon. [27] In December 2019, Bukali II paid a courtesy call on Otumfuo Osei Tutu at the Manhyia Palace , to express his gratitude for the role the Asante king played in the peace process.
Nana Oti Akenten (ruled from 1630 – 1660) was the ruler of the Asante Oyoko clan which occupied parts of what is now Ghana. [1] [2] Nana Oti was the brother of Nana Kobia Antwi and their mother was Antwiwaa Nyame.
Today, the Asante Kingdom survives as a constitutionally protected, sub-national traditional state [13] in union with the Republic of Ghana. The current king of the Asante kingdom is Otumfuo Osei Tutu II Asantehene. The Asante kingdom is the home to Lake Bosumtwi, Ghana's only natural lake.
Prempeh II (Otumfuo Nana Sir Osei Tutu Agyeman Prempeh II, KBE, c. 1892 – 27 May 1970), [1] [2] was the 14th Asantehene, or king of the Ashanti (Ruler of the Asante), reigning from 22 June 1931 to 27 May 1970.
Two kings lived in the palace, namely Otumfuo Prempeh I and Otumfuo Sir Osei Agyeman Prempeh II, KBE, the 13th and 14th kings of the Asante nation. The old palace was converted into a museum in 1995 after the new palace was built. Opoku Ware II was the first king to live in the new palace, which he occupied until his death in 1999. [5]

Osei Bonsu (born 1779 [11] – 21 January 1824) [12] [13] also known as Osei Tutu Kwame [8] was the Asantehene (King of the Ashanti). [14] He reigned either from 1800 to 1824 or from 1804 to 1824. During his reign as the king, the Ashanti fought the Fante confederation and ended up dominating Gold Coast trade.
