Maasai Mara, also sometimes spelt Masai Mara and locally known simply as The Mara, is a large national game reserve in Narok, Kenya, contiguous with the Serengeti National Park in Tanzania. It is named in honour of the Maasai people , [ 2 ] the ancestral inhabitants of the area, who migrated to the area from the Nile Basin.

A five-year management agreement was signed on 25 May 2001 and the Mara Conservancy started operations in the Mara Triangle on 12 June. Julie Ward was a British woman who was killed whilst on safari in the Masai Mara game reserve in Kenya in September 1988. The subsequent investigation into her death was notable for the campaign by her father, John Ward — firstly to persuade the Kenyan authorities to recognise that his daughter was murdered, and secondly to try to identify the killer or killers.
