A gulf in geography is a large bay that is an arm of an ocean or sea. Not all geological features which could be considered a gulf have "Gulf" in the name, for example the Bay of Bengal or Arabian Sea .
Nigeria borders Niger in the north, Chad in the northeast, Cameroon in the east, and Benin in the west. Nigeria is a federal republic comprising 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, where its capital, Abuja, is located. The largest city in Nigeria is Lagos, one of the largest metropolitan areas in the world and the largest in Africa.
Its coast lies on the Gulf of Guinea, part of the Atlantic Ocean, in the south. Nigeria gained its independence on October 1, 1960, and now consists of 36 states and the federal capital territory. Nigeria re-achieved democracy in 1999, having been ruled from 1966 until 1999 (except for the short-lived second republic) by military dictators.
