Direct AVE trains Barcelona–Seville and Barcelona–Malaga that do not make a stop in Madrid are also scheduled combining the Madrid–Barcelona line with one of the southern corridor's existing lines. S-112 (Pato, max speed 330 km/h or 205 mph) trains are used for these services and cover these distances in less than 6 hours.

On 11 October 1986 the Spanish government decided to build a new railway between Madrid and Seville. On 25 February 1988, the international tender for the acquisition of 24 high-speed trains AVE followed; these trains were ordered by 23 December 1988. The first train, based on the third generation of TGVs, was delivered on 10 October 1991.
The first line, joining Madrid and Seville, was opened in 1992, in time for the Seville Expo '92. The line was built on standard gauge, and reused segments of the existing Madrid-Ciudad Real line. After that, connections with Barcelona, Valencia, Málaga and Galicia were subsequently opened.
The Renfe Class 102 or S-102 [note 1] (nicknamed "Pato" in Spanish, because of its nose that looks like the beak of a duck) is a high-speed train used for the AVE service and operated in Spain by the state-run railway company Renfe, and based on Bombardier Transportation's power car technology.
In 1992, a standard gauge high-speed rail line was built between Madrid and Seville and the AVE high-speed service was introduced for first time. In 2003, a second AVE service was introduced on a new line from Madrid to Lleida via Zaragoza and extended to Barcelona in 2008.
