Salem is a city in northern Columbiana County, Ohio, United States. The population was 11,915 at the 2020 census. [5] It extends into southern Mahoning County and is the principal city of the Salem micropolitan area. [6] Salem was founded by Quakers in 1806 and played a key role in the abolitionist movement as a hub of the Underground Railroad.
The county seat is Lisbon and its largest city is Salem. [3] Created in 1803, the county name is derived from that of 15th-century Italian explorer Christopher Columbus. [4] Columbiana County comprises the Salem, OH Micropolitan Statistical Area, which is also included in the larger Youngstown–Warren–Salem, OH Combined Statistical Area.
The Salem Downtown Historic District is located in Salem, Ohio. The district covers approximately 95 acres (38 ha) bounded by Vine, Ohio, East Pershing, and South Ellsworth Streets, as well as Sugar Tree Alley. The district was added to the National Register of Historic Places in December 1995.

Salem Heights is bordered to the west by Goshen Township in Mahoning County and by Butler Township in Columbiana County. To the east it is bordered by Ohio State Route 45, a western bypass of Salem. U.S. Route 62 runs through the center of Salem Heights on West State Street, then turns north to join the Route 45 bypass.
