Fairview was first incorporated as a borough in 1867 and chartered in 1874. By 1876, the population had grown to over 1,000 due to the oil boom which occurred in western Pennsylvania after oil was discovered on French Creek near Titusville, Pennsylvania. In 1874, C.D. Angell laid out additional streets and lots to the east of present-day Fairview.
It surrounds the boroughs of Fairview, Petrolia, and Karns City but is separate from them. According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 24.2 square miles (62.7 km 2), of which 0.008 square miles (0.02 km 2), or 0.03%, is water. [3]
In 1998 Fairview Township annexed the former Fairview Borough. [5] According to the 2020 U.S. Census, [3] the township's population was 11,139, which is an increase from the 2010 census of 10,102. [4] It is part of the Erie Metropolitan Statistical Area.
Fairview Township began as an agricultural area, with only a small amount of industry and trade. Because of its primary agricultural base, township population growth was very slow after the initial settlement. The first census count in 1820 was 1,764. Eighty years later, in 1900, the number reached 2,042, an increase of only 278.
