  2. Lye - Wikipedia

    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lye

Lye in its solid state is deliquescent and has a strong affinity for moisture in the air. As a result, lye will dissolve when exposed to open air, absorbing large amounts of atmospheric moisture. Accordingly, lye is stored in air-tight (and correspondingly moisture tight) containers.

  6. Potassium hydroxide - Wikipedia

    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Potassium_hydroxide

In chemical synthesis, the choice between the use of KOH and the use of NaOH is guided by the solubility or keeping quality of the resulting salt. The corrosive properties of potassium hydroxide make it a useful ingredient in agents and preparations that clean and disinfect surfaces and materials that can themselves resist corrosion by KOH. [17]

  9. Drano - Wikipedia

The release of hydrogen gas stirs the mixture and improves the interaction between the lye and the materials clogging the drain. It's possible that pressure may build up inside the pipe, causing the hot, caustic solution to spurt out of the drain. Sodium nitrate reacts with hydrogen gas: Na + + NO 3 − + 4H 2 → NaOH + NH 3 + 2H 2 O. This ...
