South Dakota Highway 50 (SD 50) is a state route serving south central and southeast South Dakota. The current alignment begins at the junction of South Dakota Highway 34 at "Lee's Corner" east of Fort Thompson, and ends at the Iowa border near Richland, where it continues as Iowa Highway 3. It is about 212 miles (341 km) in length.
Leaving Sturgis, SD 79 leads to Bear Butte State Park and briefly runs concurrently with U.S. Route 212 south of Newell. Near North Dakota, the highway passes through the South Dakota portion of Custer National Forest. SD 79 then joins SD 20 for a short concurrent run, and finally turns northward until it reaches North Dakota.
South Dakota Highway 37 (SD 37) is a state route that runs across eastern South Dakota. It begins at the Nebraska border northeast of Niobrara, Nebraska, as a continuation of Nebraska Highway 14. It runs to the North Dakota border north of Hecla, where it continues as North Dakota Highway 1. It is 242 miles (389 km) in length.
I-90 was constructed in the 1970s. The four-lane Interstate replaced old US 16 as the main road connecting Rapid City and Sioux Falls. Much of Old US 16 remains intact; however, I-90 has absorbed sections and likewise has reshaped the economies of many southern South Dakota towns. [4]
The length of South Dakota's portion of I-29 is 252 miles (406 km). [2] Larger cities served by the route include Watertown , Brookings , Sioux Falls, and Vermillion . [ 2 ] The I-29 corridor features generally higher rates of population and economic growth than areas in eastern South Dakota that are further from the interstate.
