The J.H.C. Petersen's Sons Wholesale Building was a historic building located in downtown Davenport, Iowa, United States. It was built in 1910 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983. [1] 1910 Sanborn Map shows the Wholesale Building connected to the original store across the alley.
K's Merchandise Mart, Inc. (usually known as simply K's Merchandise) was a catalog showroom department store based in Decatur, Illinois. [2] It offered furniture, jewelry, and general merchandise, including electronics, at 17 locations in 5 Midwestern states at the time of its closing.

Branch stores were opened in Clinton, Iowa and Geneseo, Illinois in the 1880s. The J.H.C. Petersen's Sons' Store was built in Downtown Davenport in 1892. The structure was designed by Frederick G. Clausen, a German immigrant who moved to Davenport. It followed the latest marketing principles of the day with specialized departments under one roof.
Initially, commerce focused on dry goods, groceries, specialty stores, and wholesale goods before fashionable department stores were built, including the J.H.C. Petersen's Sons' Store (1892) and M.L. As Davenport is part of the Quad Cities of (Davenport and Bettendorf in Iowa; East Moline, Moline, and Rock Island in Illinois) the mall serves the population of these cities. The mall is located northwest of the intersection of U.S. Highways 61 (Welcome Way) and 6 (Kimberly Road) at 320 West Kimberly Road.
It was the city's largest department store during its existence, and claimed to be Iowa's largest department store at the time of this building's construction. [5] In 1970, another Davenport department store, Peteresen Harned Von Maur, bought Parker's. They operated a budget outlet for their store here until 1974 after they closed Parker's.
The grocery store was completed in 1868 by Christian Jipp, an immigrant from present-day Germany. It was one of the first retail buildings that was built on the bluff in Davenport. [ 3 ] Jipp, his wife and three daughters lived in the back of the store until the house was added in 1878.
