The swimlane flowchart differs from other flowcharts in that processes and decisions are grouped visually by placing them in lanes. Parallel lines divide the chart into lanes, with one lane for each person, group or sub process. Lanes are labelled to show how the chart is organized.

The PFD displays the relationship between major equipment of a plant facility and does not show minor details such as piping details and designations.

It is used when analyzing the steps in a process, to help identify and eliminate waste—thus, it is a tool for efficiency planning. It is used when the process is mostly sequential, containing few decisions.
