English: This regulation provides Department of the Army policy, criteria, and administrative instructions concerning individual military decorations, Good Conduct Medal, service medals and ribbons, combat and special skill badges and tabs, unit decorations, and trophies, and similar devices awarded in recognition of accomplishments.
According to the U.S. Army, the "award is intended to promote professionalism and esprit de corps by recognizing the unit that displays the most outstanding performance over a 12-month period". [ 1 ] The award is considered a unit trophy as provided for in Army Regulation 600–8–22.

The distinguishing criterion for awarding the Soldier's Medal, per Army Regulation 600-8-22, para 3-14, is "The performance must have involved personal hazard or danger and the voluntary risk of life under conditions not involving conflict with an armed enemy. Awards will not be made solely on the basis of having saved a life."
In the modern age, members of other military branches serving under an Army command are also eligible to receive Army decorations.
