Jane Radcliffe was the daughter of Robert Radcliffe, 1st Earl of Sussex, by his second wife, Margaret Stanley, daughter [1] of Thomas Stanley, 2nd Earl of Derby, and Anne Hastings, the daughter of Edward Hastings, 2nd Baron Hastings. Jane had one sister, born of the same parents, Anne Radcliffe, who married Thomas Wharton, 2nd Baron Wharton. [2]
The Byrdcliffe Colony, also called the Byrdcliffe Arts Colony or Byrdcliffe Historic District, was founded in 1902 near Woodstock, New York by Jane Byrd McCall and Ralph Radcliffe Whitehead and colleagues, Bolton Brown (artist) and Hervey White (writer). [2] [3] It is the oldest operating arts and crafts colony in America.
In 1892 she married Ralph Radcliffe Whitehead. [2] With her husband, she founded Byrdcliffe , an arts and crafts colony that opened in 1903. [ 3 ] [ 4 ] In 2004, her work was the subject of a one-person show, Jane Byrd McCall Whitehead's (1861-1955) Idealized Visions About Simple Living and the Arts and Crafts, at the Georgia Museum of Art .

The heir to a great estate in Sussex, he predeceased his father by four months.Aside from his own progeny, his sister Mary married Henry Wriothesley, 2nd Earl of Southampton who gave birth to Henry Wriothesley, 3rd Earl of Southampton.
