Portland (/ ˈ p ɔːr t l ə n d / PORT-lənd) is the most populous city in the U.S. state of Maine and the seat of Cumberland County.Portland's population was 68,408 at the 2020 census. [4]
By the 1820s, the area was Portland's second seaport via the Back Cove's ship channel. Much of the debris from the Portland fire of 1866 was deposited into Back Cove, significantly increasing the size of East Bayside. Maps produced around 1900 show an extension of the shoreline out to Marginal Way.
During World War II, Battery Steele was constructed in Portland on Peaks Island, making Fort Preble obsolete. Battery Steele itself was abandoned after the war ended. Port of Portland in July 2012. From 1970 to 2008 the Port of Portland was connected by a seasonal (summer only) international ferry service to Yarmouth, Nova Scotia.
The Western Promenade is a historic promenade, an 18.1-acre (7.3 ha) public park and recreation area in the West End neighborhood of Portland, Maine.Developed between 1836 and the early 20th century, it is one Portland's oldest preserved spaces, with landscaping by the Olmsted Brothers, who included it in their master plan for the city's parks.
The Portland–Lewiston–South Portland Combined Statistical Area is made up of four counties in Maine. The statistical area includes two metropolitan statistical areas . [ 5 ] As of the 2000 Census, the CSA had a population of 591,361 (a July 1, 2009, estimate placed the population at 623,365).
