It is a film adaptation of the novel Bid Time Return (1975) by Richard Matheson , who also wrote the screenplay.
Bid Time Return is a 1975 science fiction novel by Richard Matheson. It concerns a man from the 1970s who travels back in time to court a 19th-century stage actress whose photograph has captivated him. In 1980, it was made into the film Somewhere in Time, the title of which was used for subsequent editions of the book.
Though a film of this novel has never been made, a 1980 film, Somewhere in Time features a similar time travel technique. Based on the 1975 Richard Matheson novel Bid Time Return, the film concerns a young man, Richard Collier, unhappy with his life as a playwright, who travels back in time through self-hypnosis, coached by his former college professor, one "Dr. Gerard Finney".
