Cortez (/ ˈ k ɔːr t ɛ z / ⓘ) is a home rule municipality that is the county seat and the most populous municipality of Montezuma County, Colorado, United States. [1] The city population was 8,766 at the 2020 United States Census .
Montezuma County was created out of the western portion of La Plata County by the Colorado Legislature in April 1889. It was named in honor of Moctezuma II , who reigned as emperor of the Aztec Empire in Mexico during its decline at the hands of the Spanish invasion.
