The live broadcasting of horse racing in the New Zealand dates back to the launch of a racing radio network in 1978. The station, originally known as Radio Pacific and later as bSport and LiveSport, became TAB Trackside Radio. [4] A racing television station launched in 1992, initially known as Action TV and later as Trackside, is now Trackside 1.
Racing began on the Opaki Race Course on Boxing Day in 1885 with trains traveling from Wellington for the occasion. On 12 August 1896, the name was changed to the Masterton Racing Club and on 23 October 1987 the last meeting was held on the Opaki Course which then became a training centre. The Masterton Racing Club now race at Tauherenikau. [5]
In 1977 the New Zealand Racing Conference accepted female jockeys and they became eligible to ride on 15 July 1978 with the first Kiwi woman to ride in a totaliser race in New Zealand being Joanne Hale (Giles) on that day at Waimate. Sue Day (Christchurch), Joanne Lamond (Oamaru) and Vivienne Kaye (Awapuni) rode in later races on that day.

In 2017 the purse was increased to $400,000, making it the richest Weight for Age race in New Zealand. The race is one of two Group 1 weight-for-age events run on the same day, the other being the 1400m Waikato Sprint. A Group 2 three year old race, the David and Karyn Ellis Fillies Classic, is also on the same raceday.
