Sound cards are VERY important for teaching beginning reading in Kindergarten. Why make it more confusing than it needs to be? Open Court may well be a superior reading program but the sound/spelling card are so bad, they are a deal breaker for me. I will vote against Open Court and in favor of HM at my school and it kills me to do so.
I use Open Court and I love it! I taught Open Court in first grade, and it is one of the best programs around for phonics. First thing to remember- the teachers editions are HUGE and can be very overwhelming. Focus on the basics (sound/spelling cards, blending, decodable books, dictation, and listening comprehension.
Open Court is a research based program that teaches things in sequence-so if you leave pieces out, it is disrupting the integrity of the program and you prob. will not get the results that are expected. Give it a chance- you might like it. Kat53, Aug 1, 2006. #21.

He is the absolute sweetest kid and is very smart. I've put the letters on his desk Bb Dd and told him whenever he is about to write a word with a b or d to stop and think about the sound and what letter goes with that sound (we have open court sound/spelling cards) and that the lower case b can only fit inside a capital B.

A speech sound (technically, a phone) is what comes out of the mouth or goes into the ear. The technical term for a sound of a language as we interpret it is phoneme - so phonemic awareness is awareness of the phonemes or significant sounds of a language. The spelling system of a language reflects its phonemes.
Aug 19, 2008. Shower board will not be magnetic, either. You can't "magnetize" a board. I did not have a magnetic board last year and tacked things above it. Another teacher tapes things to their board. Or you could put velcro strips on. giraffe326, Aug 19, 2008. #3.
So, let's say it's October and I've taught some sight words (ex: my) and word families (ex: -at) and they know their kinder words (ex: mom, I). If a child wrote this: Mi mom sed i hav a pritee cat. During a 1:1 writing conference, I would circle the words "mi" and "i" and have her find the correct spelling and fix them.
