Tongland is a local nickname for the area of Calton, Glasgow controlled in the 1960s by a violent Scottish teenage gang called the Real Calton Tongs. The Tongs financed themselves using a protection racket , levying money on shops within their territory , and they marked that territory out in graffiti with their slogan "Tongs Ya Bass".

Glasgow Film Theatre was built as the Cosmo by George Singleton in 1939. Main entrance. GFT's predecessor, the Cosmo, was Scotland's first arts cinema and only the second purpose-built arthouse in Britain, after the Curzon Mayfair in London. Opened on 18 May 1939, it was also the last cinema to be built in Glasgow before the outbreak of WW2. [2]

16 January – the last regular ship on the Cork–Glasgow crossing runs, ending a 103-year-old service. 2 March – Elvis Presley stops off at Glasgow Prestwick Airport for a few hours on his journey home to the United States after doing military service in West Germany.
