Momiji Dolls were originally inspired in 2005 by kokeshi, a variety of wooden doll traditionally made in Northern Japan. [3] These dolls were carved from spare pieces of wood and hand painted. They were usually made by farmers. [1] The dolls typically consist of a head and elongated torso representing the body and legs as a single piece. [1]
Kijiya (木地屋, lit. woodworker) are Japanese woodworkers particularly known as woodturners for their lathe-produced kokeshi dolls or lacquered goods. They are attested from the medieval period, claiming descent from the oldest son of Emperor Montoku, Prince Koretaka (844–897), whom they credit with the invention of the wood lathe (rokuro). [1]
