John Alexander Smith (21 April 1863 – 19 December 1939) was a British idealist philosopher, who was the Jowett Lecturer of philosophy at Balliol College, Oxford from 1896 to 1910, and Waynflete Professor of Moral and Metaphysical Philosophy, carrying a Fellowship at Magdalen College in the same university, from 1910 to 1935.

John Edwin Smith (May 27, 1921 - December 7, 2009) was an American philosopher and Clark Professor of Philosophy at Yale University. He served as president of the American Philosophical Society , Eastern Division, the American Theological Society , the Metaphysical Society of America , the Hegel Society of America and the C.S. Peirce Society .
Smith, educated at Oundle School, entered Emmanuel College, Cambridge, in 1636, took his B.A. in 1640 and his M.A. in 1644, at which time he was chosen fellow of Queens' College. [2] His health seems to have been precarious from the first. His labours were principally confined to his office as teacher, for which he had remarkable qualifications.
Smith was born on October 9, 1970, [7] in Embro, Ontario. [8] He completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Waterloo and Emmaus Bible College.He earned a Master of Philosophy degree in philosophical theology in 1995 at the Institute for Christian Studies [8] where he studied under James Olthuis.
