Pittsburg Township is a civil township in Mitchell County, Kansas, United States. Its area includes the point at the intersection of Latitude 39.35 and Longitude -98.43333. The township's name is derived from William Augustus Pitt, one of the founders of the central town of the township, Tipton.
Longford was founded in 1870. [4] The first post office in Longford was established in 1875. [5]In 1887, Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway built a branch line from Neva (3 mi (4.8 km) west of Strong City) through Longford to Superior, Nebraska.
Tipton was originally called Pittsburg, and under the latter name was founded in 1872. [4] When it was later realized that another Pittsburg existed in Kansas, the name was changed to Tipton after Tipton, Iowa, the former home of a local resident.
