The July 1, 1919, incarnation of M-89 was much shorter relative to today's road. Its western terminus was at a junction with M-11 (later US 31, now A-2) near Ganges.It traveled east to Fennville then turned south to Pearl before turning back to the east towards Allegan on an alignment that is a few miles south of the present day configuration.

Plainwell is a city in Allegan County in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 3,788 at the 2020 census. [4] Plainwell is located on M-89 just east of its junction with US 131. The city of Otsego is about three miles (4.8 km) to the west.
Further north, the freeway enters Allegan County, and at Plainwell, M-43 departs US 131 to follow M-89 southeasterly. The two highways briefly cross through Barry County before crossing back into Kalamazoo County. M-43 and M-89 separate about a mile (1.6 km) north of Richland. M-89 continues southward into town, and M-43 turns northward. [4]

When the state highway system was initially signposted in 1919, [9] the highway between Allegan and Martin was part of M-89. [10] In 1926, when M-40 was extended from Allegan to Martin, M-89 was rerouted out of Allegan to the southeast along its present-day alignment to terminate at US 131 in Plainwell.

As US 131 passes through the outskirts of Plainwell, it curves to the northeast through a commercial area centered around the interchange with M-89; M-43 departs the freeway at this exit. [14] North of this area US 131 crosses the Kalamazoo River and runs past the US 131 Raceway Park, a dragstrip close to the M-222 interchange near Martin.
