Aransas Pass is located on the shore of Redfish Bay, a tidal water body between Corpus Christi Bay to the south and Aransas Bay to the north. The city is on the mainland of Texas and is connected to Mustang Island (which contains the city of Port Aransas) by a 6-mile (9.7 km)-long causeway, and a free ferry that carries vehicles to the island.
Every February since 2007, the city of Aransas Pass holds the Redfish Bay Trash Parade and Coastal Cleanup, an event that encourages the removal of trash and waste from the bay, due to pollution. [4] In 2009, 90 volunteers cleared three pickup loads of trash that included syringes, construction hard hats, ribbons and busted balloons. [5]
The island is oriented generally northeast-southwest, with the Gulf of Mexico on the east and south, Aransas Bay on the west, and Mesquite Bay on the north. At the southern end of the island is Aransas Pass (not to be confused with the City of Aransas Pass which is on the mainland), beyond which is Mustang Island and the town of Port Aransas.
Aransas County (/ ə ˈ r æ n z ə s / ə-RAN-zəss) [1] is a county located in the U.S. state of Texas. It is in South Texas and its county seat is Rockport. [2] As of the 2020 census, the population was 23,830. [3] Aransas County comprises the Rockport, Texas micropolitan statistical area.
In 1828, 200 Irish Catholic families, recruited from Ireland and the Irish population of New York City, contracted with the Mexican government to settle on 80 leagues of land in this area. By 1836, about 500 people lived in the colony on 84 Mexican land grants.
The pass is located on the Aransas County and Nueces County line. The second lighthouse in Texas was built at Aransas Pass by the United States government to protect shipping in Aransas Bay.
