Ashford Hospital & St. Peter’s Hospital NHS Trusts were merged on 1 April 1998. It became a Foundation Trust in December 2010. A plan for the Trust to take over Epsom Hospital was abandoned in October 2012 by NHS London board because a financially viable plan for the future of Epsom hospital as part of the merged trust could not be developed. The foundation stone for the hospital was laid by Charles Richard Sumner, Bishop of Winchester, at a site donated by the Earl of Onslow in Farnham Road in Guildford in 1863. [2] The 60-bed hospital was designed by Edward Ward Lower drawing on the ideas of Florence Nightingale and was opened as the Royal Surrey County Hospital in April 1866. [3]
St Peter's Hospital is an NHS district general hospital in Chertsey, Surrey, England. It has 400 beds and a wide range of acute care services, including an Accident & Emergency department. It is located between Woking and Chertsey near junction 11 of the M25 motorway and is managed by Ashford and St Peter's Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.
The new facility, which was designed by Sydney Tattle and built by Chapman, Lower and Peptic, [2] was officially opened by Neville Chamberlain MP, Minister for Health, as the Surrey County Sanatorium on 20 July 1928. It was established in 2012 as the Surrey Pathology Service. In 2023 it employs around 1,400 people and conducts around 60 million tests per year. The hospital has its origins in the Reigate Cottage Hospital which was founded by Dr John Walters and opened in Albert Road North, Reigate, in 1866. [3] It moved to Whitepost Hill on the northern edge of Redhill Common as the Reigate and Redhill Hospital in 1871, and became the East Surrey Hospital in 1923. [3]
