Apr 4, 2014. #1. So, I've now had Sunny for about a week! We've made so amazing progress. Sunny now knows step-up, comes to me when I open his cage, and lets me pet him! Whenever I pet him he starts 'grooming' me. Not biting, just mouthing and licking. Anyways, after grooming me for awhile he grabbed a chunk and broke the skin a bit.
A bad clip can be dangerous for a bird. You may just need to trim the first few feathers at the outside point of the wings, only the ends of the primaries and not any of the secondary feathers, it depends on how well your bird can fly. You can do it much more safely for the bird than they can, and it isn't hard.

1. Beckley, WV. Parrots. Merlin a Red Crowned Amazon. May 23, 2011. #4. They offer boarding @ my vet hospital. They showed me separate rooms for each bird, but Im still afraid of the risk. I think they only take 2-3 birds @ a time.
It hasn't let me down! I've also found it easier to try and do spot cleans/wipe downs on areas that get regular traffic, and then deep clean the whole cage weekly. I've also heard of lightly "greasing" the grate bars with coconut oil -which prevents the poops from sticking to it...
My Sennie had her first professional bird grooming today from a Mobile Bird Grooming outfit located here in central Florida. It went spledidly. I was very impressed with Paula and Brian. They were very knowledgable about birds and inspected the cage as well as Tiki and gave tips and cautions...
You will find that 'with time' your Parrot will 'become' much more excepting of this method of getting wet. IMHO, your Parrot is not getting anything near an acceptable bath and as a result the feathers are not zippering back together during preening. Or, your Parrot may have a skin irritation and/or possible mites.
cockatiel. Mar 19, 2022. #1. My quaker parrot which I have had for about 3 weeks now, is obsessed with preening me. I'm not even joking. Once he got comfortable with me, it started with hands- he plucked out dead skin and sometimes even hair. Sometime later he moved to my face and today he insisted on licking my teeth (which I don't make him do).
The good news is they grow back. It's just going to take about six months. And the bird won't fledge properly in the meantime. So once they grow out, you're going to need to be sure she can fly, and then gradually scale them back. The bad news is that your bird is now going to be helpless for those six months. Can't even glide down to the ground.
Jan 23, 2014. #18. Take some time to look at the feathers before you start preening them. As the feather matures the blood flow stops but until the whole feather looks white you stand a chance of hurting your bird. Also as others have said doing it after a bath softens the sheaths and makes them easier to remove.
