Detroit Lakes Wetland Management District is located in northwest Minnesota and includes the counties of Becker, Clay, Mahnomen, Norman, and Polk - an area of approximately 6,000 square miles (16,000 km 2). The district is divided into three general landscape areas, roughly equal in size.

KDLM broadcasts a variety of local and state sports including the Detroit Lakes Lakers HS teams, the Minnesota Vikings, Minnesota Twins, Minnesota Wild, Minnesota Lynx, Minnesota Timberwolves and Minnesota Golden Gopher Football, Basketball and Hockey. KDLM also broadcasts Sunday Night and Monday Night football from Westwood One.
The county terrain consists of low rolling hills, tree-covered and dotted with lakes and ponds. [8] The terrain slopes to the west and north. Its highest point is a hill 2.1 miles (3.4 km) northeast of Wolf Lake, the site of the USFS Wolf Lake lookout tower, at 1,861 ft (567 m) ASL. [9]
According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 28.2 square miles (73.0 km 2), of which 23.6 square miles (61.1 km 2) is land and 4.6 square miles (11.9 km 2), or 16.33%, is water. [3] The north half of the city of Detroit Lakes is within this township geographically but Detroit Lakes is a separate entity.
Willmar was established as the county seat in 1871 and was incorporated as a village in 1874 and as a city in 1901. [9] Willmar was the site of a bank robbery by the Machine Gun Kelly gang on July 15, 1930. They robbed the Bank of Willmar (later Otto Bremer Trust) of about $70,000 (equivalent to $1,277,000 in 2023) and wounded three people. [10]
