The event started at the inception in 1978 of a rally staged from Paris, France, to Dakar, Senegal (hence its name), across several African countries. Between 1992 and 2007 some editions didn't start in Paris or didn't arrive in Dakar, but the event kept its name.

Blaise Diagne International Airport (French: Aéroport international Blaise-Diagne), (IATA: DSS, ICAO: GOBD) is an international airport near the town of Diass in Thiès Region, Senegal, 43 km (27 mi) east of downtown Dakar. It serves as the main airport for Dakar, replacing Léopold Sédar Senghor International Airport, which had become too small.

Cars and motorcycles on the start of the rally in Paris. The 1992 Paris-Cape Town Rally was the 14th running of the Dakar Rally event with a unique routing. The rally had a 7,722-mile (12,427 km) long route, starting from Paris, France, on 23 December 1991 and finishing at Cape Town, South Africa, on 16 January 1992.
