The rear of the park's rebuilt grandstand. The park opened on May 29, 1915. Its first game was between the Sanford Professionals and the Lewiston Pilgrims (of Lewiston, Maine). The game was played in front of 1,300 fans. [1] In 1919, the park hosted an exhibition game between the Sanford Professionals and the Boston Red Sox.
The Goodall family operated the mills until 1953, when they sold them to the Burlington Mills Corporation. Burlington shut the mills down in 1955. The buildings are now used by a variety of smaller businesses. [2] 2017 mill fire. In 2017, the largest mill fire Sanford firefighters have ever battled erupted on Friday, June 23.
The house was built in 1871 by Thomas Goodall, an Englishman who made his fortune in American textile business, and was then owner of the Goodall Mill in Sanford. At the time of this house's construction, the mill was a relatively small operation, but by the turn of the 20th century it was the area's largest employer, with a payroll of about 1,000.
