The PairWise Ranking is a system which attempts to mimic the method used by the NCAA Selection Committee to determine participants for the NCAA Division I men's hockey tournament. The PWR compares all teams by these criteria: record against common opponents, head-to-head competition, and the RPI.

Two human polls made up the 2023–24 NCAA Division I men's ice hockey rankings, the USCHO.com/CBS College Sports poll and the USA Hockey/The Rink Live poll. [1] As the 2023–24 season progressed, rankings were updated weekly.
The College Hockey News Power Ratings are based upon KRACH, which CHN endorses as the best system to objectively rank teams. It stands for "Ken's Ratings for American College Hockey" , because it was a statistician named Ken Butler who first implemented the methodology for college hockey.
For the purposes of NCAA eligibility (and therefore KRACH), a team's record is based only on games against other Division I hockey schools which are eligible for the NCAA Tournament. Note: CHN endorses KRACH as a replacement for the RPI.
