This is a list of sheriffs of Essex County, Massachusetts. In the earliest days of the county the office of sheriff was called the marshall. [1] Since 1692 the office has been called the sheriff. [1] The Sheriff originally was an appointed office, it has been an elected position since 1856. [1] The sheriff is elected to serve a six-year term.
However, actual inmates numbers were often closer to 500 due to severe overcrowding during events like the 1967 Newark Riots. [6] The building was also updated to include running water and toilet facilities in each cell. The building served as Essex County's main jail until 1971 when a new jail was built. [7]

The Old Salem Jail, an active correctional facility until 1991, once housed captured British soldiers from the War of 1812. It contains the main jail building (built in 1813, renovated in 1884), the jail keeper's house (1813) and a barn (also about 1813). The jail was shuttered in 1991 when Essex County opened its new facility in Middleton.
Originally built on a 350-acre farm in Billerica, Massachusetts, the facility was to replace a condemned jail 15 miles away in East Cambridge, Massachusetts. [2] The facility originally could hold over 300 prisoners, cost $837,000 to build, [3] and was completed in December 1931.
The U.S. state of Massachusetts has 14 counties, though eight [1] of these fourteen county governments were abolished between 1997 and 2000. The counties in the southeastern portion of the state retain county-level local government (Barnstable, Bristol, Dukes, Norfolk, Plymouth) or, in one case, (Nantucket County) consolidated city-county government.
