Alongside the standard-length Ford Expedition, the EL was offered with a single powertrain; the 5.4 L Triton V8 was standard from 2007 to 2014, replaced by the twin-turbocharged 3.5 L EcoBoost V6 for 2015 to 2017. The EL is also sold with both rear-wheel and four-wheel-drive configurations.
A 4.2-liter OHV V6, based on Ford's 3.8-liter Essex V6, replaced the 4.9-liter inline-six, while the 4.6- and 5.4-liter SOHC V8s replaced the 5.0- and 5.8-liter OHV V8s. The new V8s were marketed under the "Triton" name and mark the first use of Ford's Modular single overhead cam (SOHC) engines in the F-Series pickups.

The 5.4 L (330 cu in) V8 is standard, while the 6.8 L (410 cu in) V10 was still a $699 option over the 5.4L V8; both were SOHC engines and used three-valve-per-cylinder heads. The 6.4 L (390 cu in) OHV four-valve-per-cylinder Power Stroke diesel engine, supplied by Navistar, was a $6,895 option over the 5.4 L (330 cu in) V8.
