By 1875, St. Mary's already proved too small for the growing congregation, so a transept was added, increasing the seating capacity to 1,000. Upon the completion of this addition, the church was rededicated by Archbishop Williams on April 30, 1876, with Bishop James Augustine Healy of Portland delivering the sermon.
