"Fly by Night" is a song by Canadian rock band Rush. It was released in 1975 and is the title track of their second studio album. The music was written by bassist Geddy Lee and the lyrics were penned by drummer Neil Peart. Peart wrote the song about his first trip away from home.
The band wanted each song on Fly by Night to show a different side to their writing and playing, which resulted in an album of varied styles. [3] [10] As Peart was a keen reader, he became the group's primary lyricist, which suited Lifeson and Lee because they preferred to write music.
For this song, drummer Neil Peart utilized his electronic drum kit, playing it on the album and in concert during live performances of the track. The song was used as the opening song of the NBC news program 1986. [3] The music video was directed by Gerald Casale, who is a member of Devo.
The commercial failure of their next album Caress of Steel, released seven months after Fly by Night, resulted in the band nearly getting dropped from their then-record label Mercury Records. Rush's fourth album, 2112 (1976), reignited their popularity, becoming their first album to enter the top five of the RPM Top Albums Chart.
Drum tablature, commonly known as a drum tab, is a form of simplified percussion notation, or tablature for percussion instruments.Instead of the durational notes normally seen on a piece of sheet music, drum tab uses proportional horizontal placement to indicate rhythm and vertical placement on a series of lines to represent which drum from the drum kit to stroke.
Caress of Steel is the third studio album by Canadian rock band Rush, released on September 24, 1975, by Mercury Records. It was recorded immediately after the band concluded touring in support of their previous album, Fly By Night, and marked a development in the group's sound, moving from the blues-based hard rock style of their debut towards progressive rock.
Later in the night, Pierson continued to wow guests — only this time, with his dance moves. "He literally danced the entire night on the dance floor afterward," Kristie says. "So cute."
"The Percussor" is a mainly electronic drum solo dominated by the sounds of triggered samples assigned to many parts of Peart's kit. For the R40 Live Tour , Peart played two short solos: the "Drumbastica" interlude during "Headlong Flight" in the first set, and an interlude named "The Story So Far" during "Cygnus X-1" in the second.
