Curriculum mapping is a procedure for reviewing the operational curriculum [1] as it is entered into an electronic database at any education setting. It is based largely on the work of Heidi Hayes Jacobs in Mapping the Big Picture: Integrating Curriculum and Assessment K-12 (ASCD, 1997) and Getting Results with Curriculum Mapping (2004, ASCD).
Ralph W. Tyler introduced the idea of "backward design" (without using this particular term) in 1949 when referring to a statement of objectives.A statement of objectives is used to indicate the kinds of changes in the student to be brought about so that instructional activities can be planned and developed in a way likely to attain these objectives.
In the United States, mathematics curriculum in elementary and middle school is integrated, while in high school it traditionally has been separated by topic, with each topic usually lasting for the whole school year. However, some districts have integrated curricula, or decided to try integrated curricula after Common Core was adopted.
Some private schools, and public schools, are offering pre-kindergarten (also known as pre-K) as part of elementary school. Twelve states (Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Iowa, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Oklahoma, West Virginia, Wisconsin, and Vermont) as well as the District of Columbia offer some form of universal pre-kindergarten according to the Education Commission of the States (ECS).
In the 2003-2004 school year, there were 313 pupils at the high school, 142 at the middle school and 431 in the elementary school. The district had a total of 65.74 staff members, 3 administrators and 31.90 aides, calculated using FTE. The pupil-to-licensed-instructor ratio was 1:13.48. More than 98% of the students are white.
Each house or residential area in Pearland is zoned to an elementary school (grades PK-4), a middle school (5-6), a junior high school (7-8), and one of the two high schools (9-12). Larry Berger was named the district's 11th superintendent in March 2022, after an internal search following the retirement of Dr. John P. Kelly.
