The hospital was commissioned to replace the aging East Glamorgan General Hospital. [1] It was built at a cost of £103 million and was opened at Ely Meadow (Welsh: Gwaun Elai) in 1999. [1] In 2017 the Hospital Board announced that the Special Care Baby Unit would be moved to Prince Charles Hospital in Merthyr Tydfil. [2]

The town also has a development of Offices, Hotel, Pub and a private Health facility which is located in Magden Park on the Ely Meadows alongside the A4119 Talbot Green to Ynysmeardy dual carriageway near the Royal Glamorgan Hospital. It also has the Avionics department of British Airways and is also the headquarters of the Welsh Blood Service.

Construction started in 1963, and the official opening took place in 1971. It was Europe's first fully integrated hospital and medical school, at a cost of £22 million. [1] It is the third largest university hospital in the UK, and the largest hospital in Wales. [2] [3] The hospital was previously managed by Cardiff & Vale NHS Trust.
