SOHC design (for a 1973 Triumph Dolomite Sprint) . The oldest configuration of overhead camshaft engine is the single overhead camshaft (SOHC) design. [1] A SOHC engine has one camshaft per bank of cylinders, therefore a straight engine has a total of one camshaft and a V engine or flat engine has a total of two camshafts (one for each cylinder bank).
As engine speeds increased through the 20th century, single overhead camshaft (SOHC) engines— where the camshaft is located within the cylinder head near the top of the engine— became increasingly common, followed by double overhead camshaft (DOHC) engines in more recent years. For OHC and DOHC engines, the camshaft operates the valve ...
Although an overhead camshaft (OHC) engine also has overhead valves, the common usage of the term "overhead valve engine" is limited to engines where the camshaft is located in the engine block. In these traditional OHV engines, the motion of the camshaft is transferred using pushrods (hence the term "pushrod engine") and rocker arms to operate ...
Engine Type 781cc liquid-cooled four-stroke 90-degree DOHC V4; Bore and Stroke 72 mm x 48 mm; Compression Ratio 11.6:1; Valve Train VTEC chain-driven DOHC, 4 valves per cylinder; earlier versions were non-VTEC, gear driven DOHC, 4 valves /cylinder; Pre-cat converter delivered 110 BHP Fuel Delivery PGM-FI fuel injection Starter Electric only
The 1991 to 1998 DOHC engine had an upper timing chain guide in between the camshaft sprockets. The timing chain was lubricated via cast-off from the top of the cylinder head and one 'squirter' on the oil pump housing. The SOHC, 1991-1998 DOHC, and 1999-2002 DOHC engines all used different timing chain sets.
OHC engines always have fewer parts when comparing systems with the same number of valves and cylinders (4 cylinder 2 valve OHC engine to 4 cylinder 2 valve OHV engine). Though it is true that some OHC engines do come close to the high moving part count of an OHV engine it is very rare.

The Quad 4 is the first domestic regular production DOHC four-cylinder engine wholly designed and built by GM, the only similar prior example being the Chevrolet Cosworth Vega, whose DOHC head was designed by Cosworth in England. In addition to the 2.3-liter DOHC Quad 4s, there was also a short-lived 2.3-liter SOHC variant called the "Quad OHC ...
